As England reduced Australia at tea in their drive to get a victory in the day four of the fifth Test at The Oval into 167-5 steve Smith failed to maneuver for the first time at the Ashes this summer.

Smith clipped at Stuart Broad to depart for 23, with made 144, 142, 92, 211, 82 and 80 within his six Test innings.
Mitch Marsh (24) also fell in the day, flicking Joe Root to brief leg having appreciated lifelines on six and 13, firstly when he had been captured off a Chris Woakes no chunk and then when Rory Burns shelled at gully – Marsh’s wicket ending a fifth-wicket alliance of 63 with Matthew Wade (60no).
Burns was the catcher when Broad disregarded David Warner (11) for the seventh time in the show through the afternoon – the batsman ending the Ashes having a dreadful tally of 95 runs in 10 innings at an average of 9.5.
Warner along with Marcus Harris (9) had completed Australia’s highest opening stand that this summer – a paltry 18 – until Broad delivered Harris’ away stump cartwheeling from around the wicket.
Jack Leach had Marnus Labuschagne (14) stumped by Jonny Bairstow prior to lunch and when Smith departed at the second session, England’s hopes of a victory inside four days were ignited.
Nevertheless, the stubborn Wade – who smashed Leach for three bounds in a row one over prior to completing a 65-ball fifth Evaluation fifty – and skipper Tim Paine (10no) could help Australia take the game into Monday.
Leach (9) and also Jofra Archer (3) fell indoors 20 minutes from the morning after England resumed on 313-8 – Broad (12no off two chunks ) smiting Pat Cummins for 2 sixes later Archer was out caught behind off Cummins on inspection and before Leach top-edged Nathan Lyon (4-69) to mid-on.
